Acton homes, by the numbers
Acton is an unincorporated community of about 7,900 people in some 2,700 homes, by the Census Bureau’s latest five-year survey (Census Reporter). More than nine in ten are single-family houses, and more than nine in ten are lived in by their owners.
Acton is also where propane shows up. About 20 percent of Acton homes heat with bottled or tank gas, against about 1 percent in Lancaster, with about 53 percent on utility gas and 13 percent on electricity. That changes the conversation when a furnace or air conditioner wears out.
Propane heat and heat pumps
A home on propane heats with fuel delivered to a tank on the property. When that furnace or the air conditioner reaches the end of its life, a heat pump is worth comparing: it heats and cools with electricity from one outdoor unit and burns nothing on site. ENERGY STAR tests cold climate heat pumps down to 5°F and says they keep working below that.
Some owners keep the propane furnace as a backup and let a heat pump or mini-splits carry most of the year; others switch fully. The fair comparison uses your own numbers: what you paid for propane last winter, your electric rate, and the efficiency of the equipment being quoted. We go over it at a free in-home consultation. Guest houses and conversions on the energy code
Heating and cooling a guest house, a converted garage or a workshop people use daily is a permitted job like any other. The California Energy Commission’s guidance on ADUs treats a garage converted to living space as an addition under the energy code, lists mini-split and multi-split systems among the options for ADUs, and notes that depending on the scope, they may need field verification and testing by a rater.
That is one more reason to plan the heating and cooling with the rest of the project instead of after it. A detached building usually gets its own single-zone mini-split, with its own outdoor unit and control, so it never depends on the main house’s system.
Permits and garage conversions in Acton
Acton is unincorporated Los Angeles County, so permits for heating and cooling work come from LA County Public Works, filed through EPIC-LA. The contractor doing the work pulls the permit.
Turning a garage into a guest unit? LA County Public Works has a garage conversion page with the steps. A ductless mini-split heats and cools a converted garage without running ducts out to it. Our guide to HVAC permits in the Antelope Valley covers the inspection and testing.
